We continued our study of the pilgrims this week and learned about their first winter in Plymouth. We read about the houses that they built and all the effort that went into building them. We learned that they did not have glass to put in their window panes, so they used oiled paper instead. Here is Audrey making her own version of an oiled paper window.
We read in Stories of the Pilgrims that about half of the pilgrims died the first winter due to sickness. Part of the problem was that they all lived in one common house together since they did not have time to finish individual homes before winter came. We did a science experiment to show how germs are spread that I thought was great. First I had the kids rip up tiny pieces of paper and put them into a glass.
I told them that the glass represented my mouth, and the pieces of paper were my germs. Then I picked up the glass and said, "This is what happens when you sneeze and don't cover your mouth.". I pretended to sneeze and let all the "germs" fly out of the glass. They ended up landing all over Audrey. It was a great visual for them and they got a kick out of it. It was a good reminder to cover your mouth when you sneeze so you don't get others sick.
Here is another activity we did for science this week. We have been reading about the different seasons in our study of the pilgrims and in reading Little House in the Big Woods. I had Audrey cut pictures out of magazines that represented each of the four seasons. I then had her glue them on this piece of poster board. She enjoyed this very much and is definitely a "crafty" kinda girl. Nathan did not make a craft with us, but was nearby with his Indy hat when it came time to take a picture. :)
This last shot is of Audrey and a drawing she made for the poem we studied this week. The poem was entitled Don't Give Up so she decided to draw a picture of herself riding her bike without training wheels. Bob and I got a kick out of this because when we tried to teach her to ride without training wheels she wanted to give up. Hopefully this means she is willing to try again. :)
I hope you enjoyed seeing what we did this week in school. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. God bless!!

Wow! That looks like so much fun! I'm feeling badly that Ryan is always my "tag-along." I need to do more things just for him. He thinks school is BORRRING and it's probably my fault. I wish I had gone with HOD or MFW this year.
I'm going to do the germ thing. My kids sure need THAT lesson.
That germ things sounds like it really explains it in kids terms....loved it!
Looks like you had a great week :)
It looks like you all had a great school week, and I'm sure Nathan gets a lot more out of school while still being able to wear his Indy hat.;) I know Daniel did much better with his studies as long as his Superman cape was on.;)
I loved the Science project too. I need to do that one to show my boys.:)
Have a great weekend, Gina!
God Bless,
Amy:)
I love the germ demonstration! We have really been spreading germs around here : (
How did you do the oil window? Is that wax paper?
I always enjoy your week in review.
Hope you all are having a great weekend!
I love her little seasons poster and your little one in the background is too cute. He's still in character. ;)
That looks like so much fun! we read 'SOTP' a couple of years ago...I think it's MY favorite homeschooling book!
Blessings,
Michelle
Looks like you guys had a great week! We too are learning about the pilgrims. We started learning about American Indians today which tied in nicely to our pilgrim study. I love the drawing Audrey did of her bike ;)
