Week in Review 10/9/09

This week we only got 3 full days of school done because of Audrey's birthday on Monday. I had planned to do school on Tuesday, but the kids were too wiped out from Disneyland, and frankly, so was I. Even though we had a short week I have 2 weeks worth of photos in this review. I am still trying to catch up on posting about school since we went camping. So here goes.....

This was a science activity Nathan did to learn about different kinds of soil. He used raisins, Oreos, and cereal to represent rocky soil, topsoil, and the humus layer.

This is an art activity he did when we read about Rahab helping the Israelite spies in Jericho. I drew the bricks and he used a mixture of glue and shaving cream to paint in the mortar. If you look close you will see a piece of red yarn just like the one Rahab put outside her window.

Here he is this morning painting some grass for science.

This is the finished product that shows 3 different types of barley: grass, dried oats, and cereal. This assignment went along with our study of Ruth picking barley in Boaz' field. I especially love his "bed head" in this shot. :)

Audrey has been learning about science in colonial America. We read about some of the strange folk remedies that were around back then. Here is a science notebook page she did showing one remedy that worked and one that did not.

We also did a fun experiment to find out how our bodies fight infections. I made all of the different cells and then she had to act out how each one works in the bloodstream. This was a very good visual example and I even learned a lot.

In history we read about the artist Benjamin West. He had a special talent for painting pictures and when he was a young boy he used berry juice for some of his first paintings. This is picture Audrey painted using orange juice and apple juice with some food coloring.

Here she is doing another history assignment. Can you guess what she is making?

If you guessed a wigwam, you were right! She used bran flakes for the tree bark on the outside and toothpicks for the tree branches on the inside.

This is a drawing she did for her science notebook to show the different parts of a flower. I am horrible at drawing, so I was very impressed with how well it turned out.

Today in science we read about fossils and how they are formed. Audrey got some of her toy animals and put impressions of their feet in some clay. She learned how fossils are made and had a great time doing it.

Here are all the animal tracks she made. Do any look familiar?

I hope you enjoyed my recap of our last 2 weeks of school. I am planning on getting a full week of school in next week so I should have lots more to share in my next review. Have a great weekend! :)
