It has been awhile since I posted about what we have been doing in school, so I though I would give you all an update. We just passed the halfway mark in our school year this week and we are on track to be done by the end of May or the first week in June. I am still pleased with the curriculum choices I have made and I am already making plans for next year. I am pretty sure I am going to stick with HOD and am in the process of figuring out how I am going to combine a 2nd grader and a Kindergartner (Yikes!!)
Anyway, we are almost done reading Stories of the Pilgrims and will resume Boys and Girls of Colonial Days next week. I enjoy both of these books because they are historical fiction and hold Audrey's attention better than a textbook would. We have also begun reading The Trumpet of the Swan.
Audrey really likes this book and its illustrations. We have gone online to find out what a real Trumpeter Swan sounds like and have looked at a map to see where they live. I am planning on going to the library later and will see if I can find some books about them.
Audrey is continuing to improve her "3R's" skills as well. Here is what she has been doing.
Handwriting
I am especially pleased with the improvement in her handwriting. Here is a sample of some copywork she did this week.
I have been having her copy her Awana and BSF verses for copywork, and it is working out very well. I do not make her do a ton of writing, but what she does do, I expect to be done neatly and correctly. When it comes to writing I believe in quality not quantity.
Reading
As far as reading goes, she is almost finished with Unit 3 of the Rod & Staff BNRS reader. We do 4 lessons per week and that is perfect for her. We do only a portion of the activities in the workbook each day to make sure she understood what she read. A lot of the workbook is busy work and I don't see the need for it.
Math
Audrey is now in the Primary Math 1B workbook and is doing very well. Singapore is a great program for her because there are not a ton of problems and she understands the way they present the concepts. I plan to stick with it for 2nd grade.
Lastly, I just wanted to share a couple photos of the kids with some snowman crafts they made at our co-op. They are both learning about winter this session.
I hope you enjoyed my update. I will try and be better about posting school updates more often. Have a great weekend and God bless!

It's so nice that you have found what works and are sticking to it! I am trying to decide on what to use next year, and as my oldest gets up there in grades (will be in 5th!) I am struggling with trying to make the right choices and finding something that I want to stick with!
Hooray, for another successful week in your homeschool!
Congratulations on making your halfway mark! :)
I totally agree with you on your handwriting philosophy!
The snowmen are too cute. With your weather being similiar to ours, are your kids asking you "what does snow look & feel like?" like mine are? LOL
Have a blessed weekend Gina :)
Your sweeties are so cute...Love the snowmen! I admire you for what you are doing. Such a rewarding challenge to share this with your little ones.
Blessings,
Laura
Thank you for the update! I always like to hear what other homeschooling moms are doing!!
It sounds like your school year is going very well.
I also thought "quality over quantity" with writing when my boys were little. A little bit done well makes so much more sense to me than a lot done messily.
Tell Nathan and Audrey, "Nice job!" on their winter projects.
Have a lovely weekend, my friend!
Big Hugs,
Amy:)
WOW! there is alot of learning going on out there in Cal. Great job Nathan and Audrey. HOD looks so wonderful to me!
Hi Gina.
I really admire you home-school moms. Sounds like you really have it together and it looks like your children love it. Thanks for the updates - very interesting.
