About our Homeschool

A friend of mine posted this on her blog and I thought it would be fun to do it as well. So here goes....

How long and for what grades have you homeschooled? This is our 2nd year homeschooling. I started when Audrey was in Kindergarten.

Did you know from the start you would homeschool or did some event point you down this road? Bob and I were in agreement that we did not want our children to go to public school. After looking into private school and homeschooling, I felt God was leading me to the latter. Bob has always been very supportive of the idea and even helps me when he can.

Were you homeschooled? No! I went to public school my whole life. Reasons #127 why I homeschool my children. :)

Does anyone in your extended family homeschool? Yes. Bob's sister Pam homeschooled her girls for several years, and his sister Jenny just began her homeschool journey this month.

What method and materials did you use your first year of homeschooling? I used Heart of Dakota, Horizons K Math, Explode the Code, and First Reader.

What method and materials are you currently using? I am still using Heart of Dakota and it is going very well. I changed our math from Horizons to Singapore and began using Rod & Staff for reading.

What books, ideas, etc. have helped shape your homeschool? Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum and Charlotte Mason Companion.

What has been the most challenging aspect for you? Learning to chill out and have fun. My type "A" personality can sometimes make me too focused on getting through our scheduled school day on time, instead of enjoying our day and having fun. I am getting better in this area, but I am still a work in progress.

What aspect has come naturally for you? Researching curriculum, scheduling our school year, and lesson planning.

What are your favorite homeschool memories thus far? Teaching Audrey to read and watching her grasp new concepts. I also love it when she climbs in my lap when I read her a book. That is priceless!

What is the best advice you've been given? Enjoy the journey, it will go by too fast.

What advice do you give others just starting this journey? Don't be overwhelmed by all the curriculum choices, teaching methods, etc. Pray and ask God for wisdom and guidance and He will give it to you.

I hope you enjoyed learning a little more about why we homeschool. God bless! :)

I loved your answers. One of my favorite memories (from when they were younger, of course) is of the boys sitting in my lap while I read them stories too. (Only Daniel didn't like to do this if I had coffee breath. LOL!) ;)

Shannon and I also went to public school, and like Bob, he was very supportive of me homeschooling the boys. (Although I did go to private school for most of my childhood...a lot of the problems are the same as public school..and in some cases worse.)

You made the statement that you are still a work in progress.... I say that all the time. Just yesterday I told Matthew, "You know, by the time you graduate next year, we will have this homeschool stuff down to a fine art." LOL!:)

Have a blessed day, Gina!
Big hugs,
Amy:)

This was so fun to read but I'm going to hire you to do some planning over here since it's your "thing". LOL You let the cat out of the bag now. ;)
